R.I.P. Terry Pratchett.

I'm still too upset to really write much of anything about this, but here goes nothing.

I don't believe that you have to get to know someone face to face to love them. I never met Sir Terry Pratchett, but I love him. Not a romantic love, of course, but…it really only hurts us to lose things that we love, and this hurts. And while I might not have ever sat down and talked with him, while he never knew that I existed, for me, he was one of the brightest stars in the sky; a blazing Polaris, a lodestone, a signal fire. This is what I want to be, what I want to do, I thought whenever I read one of his books. Let me give this same sort of joy to others, someday, somehow.

As a would-be writer myself, I can say that we all put something of ourselves into whatever we create; so in that way, I did know him.

He didn't know me, but I knew him.

Over the years, countless other readers will come to know him also, will find the joy and laughter and cleverly-phrased truths in the pieces of himself that he left behind for us. And they will love him, just as I do.

Thank you, Sir Terry Pratchett.

Thank you, but not goodbye. Because I have a shelf full of your words to revisit again and again, and after all, 'There are times in life when people must know when not to let go. Balloons are designed to teach small children this.'

And I, for one, won't ever let go.
